Description
March 2017 forever changed the lives of the Gordon Family. That's when they found out that Mickey, husband and father, had brain cancer. This was after almost two months of nauseousness and vomiting, visits to doctors to figure out the cause, trying different medication and treatments for help, and having an MRI done.
On March 21, two days before his twin's third birthday, he was prepped for an 8 hour plus brain surgery to remove the tumor. Thank goodness it was all removed, however, the surgeon did not know what it was and said they had to wait a few days for the pathology report to come back.
Several days later, while Mickey was still in the hospital, the family's worst nightmare came true...the tumor was cancerous. It was a Medullablastoma, which is a tumor most commonly found in children and teenagers. Less than two percent of adults get this type of brain tumor, and Mickey had it. What are the odds, right?
What the family thought would be a quicker heal time turned into the most difficult year of their lives. Mickey spent over a week in the hospital, before going to a rehabilitation hospital for another three weeks. Once he came home from rehabilitation, he began in home physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech. He also traveled to University of Penn everyday for 30 days for radiation treatment to his brain and spine.
While the surgery and radiation were very successful, everything left Mickey a little different. His balance and coordination are off, due to the location of the tumor. His speech is somewhat affected. He only drives seldomly and with a passenger to accompany him. Mickey's ability to complete everyday tasks is still a struggle. Most importantly, he has been unable to watch or take care of his kids, which he used to do when he wasn't working. (Mickey owns a DJ and Entertainment company. He prides himself on his voice and his charisma.)
Since Mickey cannot currently work at the capacity he used to, and is unable to watch his twins all day, the family needed to enroll the children into school much earlier than they were planning. Mickey's wife, Kate, works as a public school teacher and tries to do as much as she can to make ends meet, but it still isn't enough.
The family is hosting a Day of Play at Princeton Playspace, on Sunday, April 29, 2018, from 2:00-5:00 PM, to honor Mickey and help continue to raise funds for ongoing treatment for Mickey, bills, and the schooling of the twins. There will also be a live concert from The Fuzzy Lemons, refreshments, door prizes, and much more! It's an event that you don't want to miss!
